The FDA is announcing a recall of Elite Treats for salmonella concerns

The Food and Drug Administration announced Tuesday a recall of certain dog treats because of concerns about possible salmonella contamination.

Elite Treats, based in Florida, has issued a recall of several 6-ounce bags of Elite Treats Chicken Chips for Dogs, according to the FDA.

The recalled bags have lot number 24045 and an expiration date of April 2027.

The dog treats were sold to Florida Hardware, which distributed the items to supply stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

The contamination was discovered after testing by a third-party laboratory identified the contamination in a related but not commercially released version of the same product, the FDA said.

No infections have been reported so far with the treatment.

The FDA said salmonella can cause illness in pets who eat the products.

Pets with a salmonella infection may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting, while some pets may have a poor appetite and abdominal pain, the agency said. Pet owners should contact their veterinarian if their pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms or if they are concerned that the pet may be infected.

The agency said that pets can become infected without showing symptoms because infected pets, even if they do not show symptoms, can act as carriers and transmit salmonella through feces and saliva in the home to people and other pets in the home.

People can be exposed in a number of ways, the FDA said, including handling contaminated products, contact with pets that have eaten the product or contact with surfaces that have touched contaminated food, such as dishes, utensils or tables.

The risk of human illness from salmonella-contaminated pet food increases if people don’t wash their hands properly after handling food or contact with their pets by not properly cleaning contaminated surfaces, the FDA warned.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal illnesses in humans, according to the agency. Healthy people infected with salmonella should check themselves for symptoms, which may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever. In rare cases, salmonella can lead to serious issues, such as arterial disease, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms.

Young people, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are at risk of infection, the FDA said. People who develop symptoms after coming into contact with the recalled product or a pet that has eaten the product are urged to contact their healthcare provider.

Consumers are urged to stop using the recalled treats. They are told to dispose of the product out of reach of children, pets and wildlife.

“Wash and clean pet food bowls, cups and storage containers,” the FDA’s recall warning states. “Always make sure to wash and sanitize your hands after handling the recalled food and any utensils and surfaces that touch the recalled food.”

Customers may contact Elite Treats for information on how to request a refund.
